History of the Irish Holdem Poker Open

The introduction of Texas Hold'em 

Terry Rogers a Dublin book maker introduced Texas Hold'em No Limit Poker to Ireland and Europe after stumbling across the game in Las Vegas in the mid to late 1970's

Terry's bookmakers establishment was situated in Fairview, above the shop of the first floor is where the first games of Texas Hold'em took place in Ireland. This club was small and consisted of 3 tables spread across a two seperate rooms.


At the time there were many variants of poker being played in Ireland, the introduction of Texas Hold'em poker brought fast, exciting poker variant which has past the test of time, which is still go to game for many poker enthusiasts 50+ years later

In 1979 a few years of educating players of the rules and mechanics of Texas Hold'em, with the increased popularity,
having experienced the World Series Of Poker which was a yearly event in Las Vegas since 1970, Terry Rogers decided to create an event, to be held over the Easter weekend in Dublin. Hense, created the Irish Holdem Poker Open

The inaugural Irish Holdem Poker Open took place in 1980 in Excentric Club, Fairview
